If you are still typing, chances are you are wasting valuable time and money. Here’s why.

The world has changed, dictation vs typing is actually a thing. Dictation, also known as voice typing, speech-to-text or automated speech recognition is not only easier than typing, research has confirmed it is 7-8 times faster.

Thanks to advances in speech recognition technology, dictation speed has increased considerably in recent years. This software has been around in some form or another since the early 1950s. It is an ever-evolving technology that has seen adoption in our everyday lives with notable assistive digital solutions like Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant.

Speech-to-text technology is the most accessible and time-efficient way for people to optimize the way they work. Dictation is literally “Dictating the future” of what productivity and efficiency could look like and many business professionals are anxious to use voice for more than asking Siri or Alexa to set timers, alarms or home devices.

What has also changed is the workspace. It used to be offices where most business professionals can be found banging away at their computers. Now, access to business apps on mobile devices encourage many workers to ditch traditional cubicles for the freedom and flexibility of mobile work. Arguably, most of us are constantly on the move with our mobile devices in hand at all times; for many, that is their job. Lawyers, physicians, insurance adjusters or other mobile professionals can dictate into their device while on the go. In an era where so many of us are reliant on our mobile devices, speech-to-text software offers us convenience when we need it most.

Everyone speaks a lot faster than they can type. While most people type 38 to 40 words per minute, when they speak, that speed surges to 150 words per minute. By dictating your words instead of typing them, you can work 7-8 times as fast. If you typically spend 4 hours per day on written communications, you can achieve the same amount of work in less than 1 hour using dictation.

It is at the convergence of easier and faster where we find the many cost and time saving benefits of dictation.

What could you be doing with the extra time saved? Making money…!

Industries are always on the lookout for ways to save money and improve efficiency. Here is a list of examples all of which either prevents leakage or generates additional revenue.

  • Sales Professionals can spend more time following up on leads and closing more deals.

  • Lawyers can spend more time completing cases or taking on new clients.

  • Physicians can spend more time on patient care and seeing more patients.

  • Business Analysts can spend time capturing more accurate business requirements earlier on in the software development cycle to mitigate cost.

  • Bloggers, Podcasters, and Influencers can spend more time on actually creating meaningful and creative content.

In fact, this entire blog was written using a speech-to-text transcription platform. During a brief morning walk, I was able to download my thoughts for this blog by simply opening up the PennAI app on my smartphone. PennAI (penn.ai) is powered by artificial intelligence and boasts a simple, solution to automate note-taking. It will record, transcribe and summarize voice conversations, meeting, lectures, podcasts, you name it. If capturing ideas in digital form is important, this does the job quite well.

With one click, as I spoke PennAI instantly captured my voice recordings and typed out the words on the screen, converting my speech-to-text in real-time. During the recording, I added a few pictures from my camera roll to enhance the material. I spoke for about 2- 3 mins and once complete, I was able to view the automatically generated transcript which was about an average page of text. According to research, that compares to 14 minutes of typing.

I was able to capture far more information quicker than it took to find the time, sit at a desk and open my computer to type it all out. By then, I am sure I would have forgotten all the great ideas top of mind. All I could think about was, how can I now leverage the extra time I have gained?

Dictation is far more efficient than typing because it is faster, affordable, always available at anytime, anywhere—all by voice—directly on you mobile device in real-time.
